Registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero) is a record-keeping system. It is the extension that assists the Italian government in keeping track of the vital records of Italian citizens abroad.
Italian nationals who relocate from Italy to England/Gibraltar/Wales/Channel Islands must complete the AIRE registration form and submit it to the Italian Embassy in London.
This article covers topics like what AIRE is, who needs to register for AIRE in London, what it is necessary to register for AIRE, and other necessary documents.
What is the REGISTER OF ITALIANS RESIDENT ABROAD (AIRE)?
AIRE: Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero or Registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad. The AIRE came into progress in 1988.
If you are an Italian citizen born in Italy but have moved to the UK, you must register with the Londra Italian consulate’s AIRE registry. The London consulate and the comune area in Italy where you last registered as a resident share your record.
If the Italian consulate has recognized you under Jure Sanguinis, both your local Italian consulate and your ancestor’s former commune (municipality) of residence will hold your file. When the Londra consulate recognizes Italian citizenship under jure sanguinis, the registration with the AIRE is usually done automatically.
Being registered in the AIRE is required to gain consular services, such as requesting a passport renewal or a new Italian passport. Another advantage is that you will vote in Italian national elections and Italian municipal while in the UK.
Note: Not everyone requires registration of AIRE in London.
Let’s see who does not require an AIRE with London Italy Consulate below:
- People who do not stay in the UK for more than a year.
Seasonal workers who are only in the UK for a short time are not required to register.
- Employees of the Italian government who are working in the UK
- Members of the Italian Armed Forces stationed at a NATO base outside of Italy
Who can sign up for the AIRE in Londra?
- Citizens of Italy who have decided to stay in the UK for more than a year
- Italian citizens who have acquired citizenship by birth (i.e., via Jure Sanguinis)
- Italian citizens who have obtained Italian citizenship in the UK
Those who have been recognized or will be recognized as Italian citizens in the UK, Jure Matrimonii or Jure Sanguinis, will be automatically transcribed into the AIRE upon completing your application process.
Instead, under Italian law, all eligible Italian nationals who are moving abroad or already living abroad must register their new residence address if they will live abroad for more than 12 months.
You need to complete the AIRE registration within 90 days of your arrival at the presiding consulate for the jurisdiction in which you live.
Please keep in mind that even if you move within the same jurisdiction, you will need to update your personal information in the AIRE again.
While there are no penalties for noncompliance, it is the responsibility of all Italian citizens to notify the Italian government of any significant life events in their families. Births, marriages, deaths, and divorces are all included.
It is also necessary to update any other relevant information in your files, such as a change of profession, residence,or other details previously recorded in the AIRE.
Documents evidencing these events must bear an Apostille seal. Both the document and the seal will need to be translated into Italian.
You may be able to register via Fast.it system in AIRE Londra consulate.
How to register AIRE in London?
Step 1:Registration of Accounts (REGISTRATI). At the start of the procedure, you must confirm your Italian citizenship by checking the appropriate box. You’ll need a valid email id and a password; then, only you can enter your information.
Step 2: You will receive a mail with an activation link to your account (LINK ATTIVAZIONE UTENZA). You have 72 hours to activate the AIRE account; if you do not do so within the time frame (72 hours), you can also ask for another account activation code (INVIO NUOVO CODICE DI ATTIVAZIONE).
Step 3: After activating your account, you must access the system and complete the online AIRE registration application.
Note: Uploading a copy of your address proof and your ID is mandatory.
What are the necessary documents to register for AIRE or update your information in AIRE?
The below list is a general overview of what you may require,
- A completed and signed online AIRE registration or updation form.
- A copy of your Italian ID card or passport.
- Valid proof of legal stay in the UK (valid resident permit, visa, work authorization card).
- Proof of residency (utility bill (gas, electric, phone, cable/satellite, internet), driver’s license, or a copy of your rental contract).
Another critical factor is that if you have lived in Italy and have an Italian National Healthcare System, you will lose access to the service in Italy and the UK.
On the other hand, Italian citizens registered with AIRE London can avail 90 days of free emergency medical services per year. You are eligible for this medical service if you do not have any other form of health insurance or coverage that covers emergency medical services.
Do you require health insurance Coverage?
- At first, you must submit a declaration to the relevant Azienda Sanitaria Locale (Local Health Authority) stating that you are an Italian citizen and currently enrolled in the AIRE.
- If you have been enrolled in the AIRE abroad and decide to move again to Italy, your AIRE file will be closed upon registration in your chosen commune of residence.
- And then, if you decide to move to the previously lived commune or where your ancestor resided, your records will remain in place.
- Also, if you decide to move to a different commune, your information will be automatically shared with your new commune of residence.
Following your initial registration, you will get a letter that you can take to your local health authority to (re)register in Italian or European Healthcare Systems. Once your record has been received by the commune, and a successful residency check has been completed, you will be able to request an updated Carta d’Identita (identification card) from the commune.
