Introduction

ESTA is a combined program that determines visitors’ eligibility to travel to the US following the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). ESTA authorization does not decide whether a passenger is eligible for United States flights. U.S. Customs and Border Control authorities assess admissibility upon entry of passengers. An ESTA application provides biographical information and responses to questions about VWP’s qualifications. ESTA applications can be sent at any time before the flight, but passengers are encouraged to apply as quickly as they begin making travel arrangements or before buying airline tickets. For specific traveler screening systems, details provided by travelers through the ESTA website is subject to the same stringent data security requirements and controls. Exposure to such knowledge is limited to those with a right to learn about the profession. A US government runs the website and uses technologies to avoid unwanted access to the information accessed and displayed. Data is covered and regulated under U.S. laws and legislation, including the Federal Information Security Management Act. Any individual entering the United States is expected to possess an authorized ESTA under the Visa Waiver system.
