Covid-19 Travel Restrictions in Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s airports are open for incoming passengers, with medical screenings, monitoring, and quarantine criteria.

Ethiopia has closed its land boundaries, but there are still open airports. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (and other international ports of arrival) have taken more steps to screen passengers entering, leaving, or transiting via Ethiopia. Screening may include temperature measurements, completing a questionnaire for health screening, and answering health officials’ questions. This will provide tests for your self-isolation on recent journeys to impacted areas and your accommodation details. Prior to leaving the airport, passengers will also be checked again.

It would be appropriate for travelers who test positive for the virus but show only mild symptoms to stay in self-isolation for a further 14 days (where possible). Prior to the end of self-isolation, they could be checked again. They would need to remain at a government-designated isolation center until they have stabilized and tested negative for follow-up testing if they do not self-isolate. Those with more extreme symptoms may be brought for treatment to a government-designated isolation center or hospital.

All passengers arriving at Bole International airport should be presented with a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test given no later than 120 hours before arrival, starting from the time the sample is given. Travelers are subject to a compulsory 14-day self-quarantine at home and must also send a sample upon arrival. Any traveler traveling without a COVID-19 RT-PCR negative certificate is subject to 14-day medical screening and quarantine. At their own expense, the first 7 days will be at a government-designated facility and the remaining 7 days at home.

If the transit time is less than 72 hours, travelers with an onward ticket to another destination can transit via Ethiopian airports. Travelers traveling for 8 hours or less will linger in the airport’s departure lounge. You will be taken to a designated transit hotel for the transit of more than 8 hours for the length of your stay. Travelers on transit are subject to medical screening.
