ETIAS, the European Travel and Information Authorisation System, is set to become operational in mid-2025. This timeline was established based on an action plan endorsed by the ministers of EU countries in October 20231. Here’s what you need to know about the implementation:

Launch Date: ETIAS will start to be operational in mid-2025. Exact date of Launch didn’t announced yet.

Entry Requirements: Nationals of approximately 60 countries and territories who currently enjoy visa-free travel to any of the 30 European countries will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before embarking on their trip.

Application Process: Travelers can submit their ETIAS applications online via either the official ETIAS website or the official mobile app.

Gradual Implementation:

Transitional Period: After the launch of ETIAS in mid-2025, there will be a transitional period lasting at least six months. During this time, travelers should apply for their ETIAS travel authorization, but those without one will not be refused entry as long as they fulfill all remaining entry conditions.

Grace Period: Following the transitional period, travelers must have an ETIAS travel authorization to enter the 30 European countries. However, there is an exception: those coming to Europe for the first time since the end of the transitional period will be allowed to enter without an ETIAS, provided they fulfill all remaining entry conditions

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a significant development in European travel regulations. It stands for the European Travel and Information Authorisation System. Essentially, it’s a digital authorization that travelers from certain countries will need to obtain before visiting any of the 30 European countries that are part of the Schengen Area. This system aims to enhance security, streamline entry procedures, and facilitate smoother travel for both tourists and authorities.

Why ETIAS?

Visa-Free Travel: Currently, nationals of around 60 countries and territories enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen Area. However, starting from the implementation date, they’ll need an approved ETIAS travel authorization to enter.

Pre-Screening and Security: ETIAS allows authorities to pre-screen travelers before they arrive. It checks their information against various databases, including criminal records and security watchlists. This helps identify potential risks and ensures safer travel.

Streamlined Entry Process: Instead of dealing with paperwork at the border, travelers can apply for ETIAS online. Once approved, they’ll have a smoother entry experience.

Can I Visit Non-EU Countries with ETIAS?

No, an ETIAS authorization is valid only for the European countries listed above. For other European countries, you must check their specific immigration and visa policies to determine if you need to apply for a visa.

Can I Enter Any EU Country with ETIAS?

Yes! An ETIAS is issued for the entire Schengen Area and the four EU countries that will join Schengen in the near future: Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania. During the three years of validity, you can enter any EU and Schengen country. However, entry is still subject to the discretion of border authorities.

Entering Ireland with ETIAS

No, an ETIAS will not allow you to enter Ireland. Ireland operates with its own visa policy, so you may need to apply for a Schengen short-stay visa if you plan to visit Ireland.

First Entry Country

When you apply for an ETIAS, the first country you state in your application determines your initial entry point into the EU. For subsequent trips within the three-year validity, you can visit any other country in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days.

Remember, ETIAS enhances travel safety and simplifies entry procedures, making your European adventures smoother and more enjoyable!
