Introduction

The U.S. State Department can no longer allow the passport adding pages in U.S. passports effective January 1, 2016. U.S. passport holders traditionally had the choice of charging for the addition of 24 extra passport pages when existing passports required adequate room for visa entry or exit stamps. The decision to terminate the operation has been made to strengthen the passport’s protection and conform to international passport requirements. To alleviate the effects of not offering adequate passport pages to regular passengers, the State Department started issuing 52-page passports to all applicants outside the United States at no extra cost as of 1 October 2014. In the United States, applicants can pick a 28-page or 52-page book.

American nationals are required to have a valid United States passport for most international travel. Your passport can be extended at any time, but the Department of State’s website recommends extending within nine months of the passport expiry date on the passport details page. Passports for Americans aged 16 and over are valid for ten years, while passports for younger children are valid for five years. Specific renewal requirements vary depending on different factors, including when your passport was issued and when you applied for your current passport.

What is Second U.S. Passport?

Current regulations represent the Department of State’s longstanding policy that no individual should have more than one acceptable or potentially valid U.S. passport at any time unless expressly approved by the State Department. To a traveler’s ease, second fee passports are not provided. The issuance of a second valid U.S passport should be considered an exception of the regulations and should only be approved individually if justified. The second valid passport might not be internationally limited, i.e., just for travel in a few countries. Nonetheless, it would be restricted in length and effective for a maximum of two years.
