Travelers to the United States must obtain Visa from one of the United States consular missions unless they come from one of the visa-free countries or Visa Waiver Program countries. The same set of rules apply to Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands while different rules apply to Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.

As of 17th MAR 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entry has been closed for visitors who have been to Latvian, Austrian, Belgium, Denmark, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Estonian, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Iceland, Ireland, Italian, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Dutch, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain, and the United Kingdom in fourteen days before entry to the United States of America. The limitation does not apply to permanent residents, immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and several unique categories.

Mexico citizens may travel to the U.S.A without a passport under a limited scenario if they hold a Border Crossing Card and seek to enter the U.S. for not more than 72 hours while remaining in the “border area.”

While there are about more than 100 different types of visas to the US, there are two main categories of U.S.A visas:

  • Non immigrant visa: brief visits such as tourism or leisure, business, Attending meetings, work, visiting family and friends, or study.
  • Immigrant Visas: for people to immigrate to the United States of America. At the port of arrival, the immigrant visa holder is processed for a permanent resident card or green card. Upon endorsement with a C.B.P. admission stamp, it serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent legal residence for one year. Children with an IR-3 or IH-3 visa will automatically become United States citizens or nationals upon admission to the United States of America and be processed for citizenship (N-560).
