Passport Requirements based on Ethiopia Visa Policy

All travelers except the following require passport/ Travel documents:

Travelers with an «Laissez Passer» issued by the United Nations provided they are traveling on duty.

Travelers with travel documents/passports issued to refugees and people without nationality or citizenship.

Document Validity

Passports/travel documents and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid on arrival.

Travelers can enter Ethiopia only through Addis Abba International Airport. Other means are possible provided special permission as well as a visa is obtained from the Government.

Ethiopia Visa Policy Visa Issuance process

1. before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Ethiopia and be aware of  Ethiopia visa policy.

2. On arrival: A visa may be issued, if necessary, to citizens of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Luxembourg

Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States of America.

3. On arrival: A visa is issued if necessary to travelers with British passports/travel documents endorsed «British CitizenÂ.»

4. On arrival: A visa is issued, if necessary, to travelers with passports/travel documents issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) coming for touristic purposes only.

5. On arrival: A visa may be issued if necessary, to foreign residents regardless of nationality, residing in Austria, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil, People’s Republic of China, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Japan, Israel, Republic of Korea, Kuwait

Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, New Zealand, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Thailand, and the United States of America. Visa issuance fees depend on the type of visa and the duration of the visit.

6. On arrival: A visa is issued if necessary, to travelers with the ID Card of Foreign Citizens of Ethiopian Origin.

7. On arrival: A visa is issued, if necessary, to travelers with normal passports/travel documents provided they are citizens of African Union member countries attending seminars, workshops, or meetings organized by the African Union or doing other official duties of the African Union and holding a letter of invitation stating the purpose of travel.

8. On arrival: A visa is issued if necessary, to citizens of countries that are not members of the African Union provided they are attending seminars, workshops, or meetings organized by the African Union or doing other official duties of the African Union and holding a letter of invitation stating the purpose of travel.

9. On arrival: A visa is issued if necessary to travelers with an «Laissez Passer» issued by the United Nations provided they are attending seminars, workshops, or meetings organized by the African Union or doing other official duties of the African Union and holding a letter of invitation stating the purpose of travel.

10. On arrival: A visa may be issued, if necessary, to ADB, ECCAS, COMESA, ECOWAS, SADC, IGAD, or UNECA, and their officials arriving on official missions, or for other purposes provided they have a supporting letter.

11. On arrival visa policy of Ethiopia: A visa is issued if necessary to travelers if the period of transit exceeds 12 hours against a fee as follows:

  • A single transit: USD 20
  • A double transit: USD 30

a) Visa issuance fees depend on the type of visa and the duration of the visit as follows:

1. A work visa:

  • One month, single entry: USD 20
  • Three months, multiple entries: USD 30
  • Six months, multiple entries: USD 50
  • One year, multiple entries: USD 100

2. A tourist visa:

  • One month, single entry: USD 20
  • Three months, multiple entries: USD 30
  • Six months, multiple entries: USD 40

b) Diplomatic and service passport bearers: free of charge.

c) Fees:

A tourist visa:

  • One month, single entry: USD 20
  • Three months, multiple entries: USD 30
  • Six months, multiple entries: USD 40

d) This does not apply to citizens of Eritrea who require a visa before arrival.

e) This does not apply to travelers of Eritrean origin who require a visa before arrival.

f) This applies only to citizens of African Union member countries: Botswana, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde Islands, Cameroon, The Republic of Central Africa, Comoros Islands, Congo (Brazzaville), Chad, Congo (Kinshasa), Djibouti, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt

 Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea Republic, Kenya, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Libya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Nigeria, Sao Tome & Principle, Seychelles, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Swaziland, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Tunisia, Zimbabwe.

Visa Exemptions based on visa policy of Ethiopia

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

  • Citizens of Ethiopia.
  • Citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
  • Citizens of Djibouti staying for no more than three months.
  • Citizens of Kenya staying for no more than one year.

5. Travelers staying for no more than three months provided they are:

  • Citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Algeria, Russia, and Sudan with diplomatic passports or service passports.
  • Citizens of the Yemen Republic with diplomatic passports, service passports, or special passports.

6. Travelers with diplomatic passports or service passports issued by member countries of the African Union, provided they are attending seminars, workshops, or meetings organized by the African Union or doing other official duties of the African Union. However, this does not apply to citizens of Eritrea, who always need a visa.

7. Travelers with a residence permit issued by Ethiopia to foreign residents.

8. Travelers with an «Laissez Passer» issued by an African Union member country provided they are attending seminars, workshops, or meetings organized by the African Union or doing other official duties of the African Union.

TWOV (Transit without Visa)

TWOV is permissible for travelers continuing their trip to a third country within 12 hours, provided they have onward tickets and do not leave the airport.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

The following rules apply:

  • Two liters of alcoholic drinks/ beverages
  • Two bottles or 600ml of perfume
  • Half a pound of tobacco, 400 cigarettes, or 250g tobacco cigars for adults only

Export regulations

Free export of the goods for personal use as fine.

Pets

Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a certificate of good health/medical certificate issued by a veterinarian in the home country.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Ethiopia, namely Addis Ababa. Luggage of travelers arriving from Djibouti should clear at Dire Dawa.

Exemption:

Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside of Ethiopia when the onward flight is within 24 hours. If the onward flight is not within 24 hours and travelers need their luggage, it will have to be cleared.

Airport tax

Travelers are not required to pay any airport tax levied on passengers upon their departure from the airport.

Currency Import regulations

Travelers are allowed to import local currency (Ethiopian Birr- ETB) up to ETP 200 per person, but there are no restrictions on importing foreign currencies provided the imported sums are declared to the customs on arrival. Foreign currency may be exchanged only through authorized banks and fine organizations as wise.

Currency Export regulations

Travelers are allowed to export local currency (Ethiopian Birr- ETB), provided the traveler has a re-entry permit up to ETB 200 per person. Foreign currencies: Travelers are allowed to export foreign currencies up to the amounts imported and declared.
