IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport requirements according to Ghana visa policy:

All travelers except the following require a passport/travel document:

1. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer issued by the United Nations (UN) provided they travel on business.

2. Travelers with a Seaman Book as long as they are traveling on duty.

3. Travelers with a Travel Certificate issued to citizens of the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS): Burkina Faso, Cape Verde Islands, Benin, Gambia, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Togo

4. Travelers with documents issued by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) or by the United Nations (UN) to refugees and people without nationality/citizenship.

Document validity according to Ghana visa policy

Passports and alternative documents, or any of them, should be valid upon arrival as per Ghana visa policy.

Visa Issuance according to Ghana visa policy

1. before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest Embassy or consulate (representation) of Ghana.

2. On arrival: A visa can be issued if necessary to travelers with regular passports/travel documents, provided they obtain prior approval from the Director of Immigration (at least 48 hours before arrival).

  • As per Ghana visa policy, the traveler/visitor must have a letter of confirmation of the visa approval issued by the Ghanaian Immigration Service.
  • This letter must contain the entry visa number and the passport/travel document number of the traveler. Former Citizens of Ghana are exempted from the prior approval condition.
  • The application must be accompanied by a copy of the biographical details and a photo page of the passport/travel document of the applicant. It may be sent by the business partner, host, or sponsor of the tourist or sent directly by fax to: (+233) 21 258249; or by e-mail to director@myzipnet.com.
  • Fee: USD 100.
  • Fee: Free of charge to Citizens of Zimbabwe.

Visa Exemptions according to Ghana visa policy

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Ghana.

2. Travelers are staying for 90 days, provided they are citizens of Burkina Faso, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde Islands, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Mali, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Singapore, Nigeria, and Togo.

3. Travelers with a re-entry permit or a residence permit issued by Ghana.

4. Travelers with diplomatic passports or service passports stay for no more than 60 days.

5. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer issued by the United Nations provided they are traveling on business.

6. Children aged less than 16 years old travel in the company of their parents or join their parents residing in Ghana.

TWOV (Transit without Visa)

TWOV (Transit without Visa) is permissible for travelers continuing their trip to a third country within 24 hours, provided they have tickets with confirmed reservations and other documents for their next trip. Besides, travelers are not allowed to leave the airport.

However, TWOV does not apply to Citizens of South Africa who need a visa at all times.

Additional information for Ghana visa policy

1. All travelers must have a return or onward tickets, all necessary documents for their next trip, or a letter from an employer acting as a guarantor of their return to their home country.

  • If travelers fail to provide such documents, they are required to pay a deposit equal to the value of a return ticket to the Immigration Office.

2. On arrival, all foreigners’ who reside in Ghana must have or acquire a Registration Card, even if they have an Alien Registration Certificate; they are not identical documents. Besides, two passport photos will be needed. However, a Registration Card is not needed by transiting travelers.

Warnings

Travelers/visitors who do not respect entry or transit regulations will be subject to payment of significant fines: GHS 5,000.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Travelers aged 16 years old and more are allowed free import of:

  • 250g of tobacco, 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, or an appropriate mix of such quantities.
  • 1L of spirits over 22% volume or 2L of spirits less than 22% volume of alcoholic drinks and 2L of wine.
  • Half a pint of perfumes and 250 ccs. Of eau de toilette and 60 ccs.

Prohibited:

Due to the outbreak of swine flu (H1&N1), all types of pork/pork products are not allowed to enter.

Crew member’s customs regulations

For crew members, the same rules apply to ordinary travelers.

Pets

Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate of good health and have a medical certificate of vaccination against rabies issued in the home country. Pets are permitted to enter as luggage, as freight, or in the cabin.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Ghana.

Exemption:

Luggage of transit travelers/visitors whose destination is outside of Ghana provided travelers who do not leave the airport.

Airport tax as per Ghana visa policy

All travelers are required to pay a Traveler Service Charge upon departing from the airport as follows.

Currency Import regulations as per Ghana visa policy

Local and foreign currencies (Ghanaian Cedi-GHS): up to USD 10,000 or its equivalent. Travelers are expected to report the amounts at the port of entry (or departure) to Customs and fill in the BOG Foreign Exchange Declaration Form (FXDF). Greater than USD 10,000 will be confiscated.

Local currency:

Travelers are allowed to import local currency (Ghanaian Cedi-GHS) up to those amounts previously permitted to be exported out of the country so long as they are correctly recorded in the passport or other travel documents. Besides, such re-importation must be declared.

Foreign currencies:

There are no restrictions on importing foreign currencies, provided the imported sums are declared upon arrival on the relevant currency declaration form.

Travelers must exchange foreign currencies at a commercial bank, which will mention the exchanged sums on the back of the declaration form. The declaration form of currency should be kept and turned in upon departure.
