IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements: –

All travelers except the following require a passport:

– Citizens of Myanmar with a Seaman Book.

Document Validity: –

Passports and alternative documents, or either of them, have to be valid at the time of arrival.

Additional information: –

Traveling to or from Myanmar is only permitted by air or by sea.

Visa Issuance: –

1. Before arrival: Visitors are kindly requested to contact Myanmar’s nearest representative.

2. On arrival: If it is not possible to apply for a visa via a consulate or an embassy of Myanmar, a visa could be issued at Yangon Airport to travelers staying for no more than 28 days provided they have a pre-approved letter issued by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism (MHT) and submit a travel plan, an address in Myanmar and a copy of the passport.

The pre-approved letter can be acquired directly by contacting the MHT at 77/91 Sule Pagoda Road, Yangon, or by e-mail at mtt.mht@mptmail.net.mm or through a travel agent.

Visa Exemptions: –

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Myanmar.

2. Indians citizens stay for no more than 90 days to provide diplomatic or official passports.

3. Russian citizens stay for no more than 90 days only if they have service or diplomatic passports.

4. Travellers staying for no more than 30 days provided they are citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Cambodia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia diplomatic or official passports.

5. Citizens of Brunei and Indonesia staying for no more than 14 days only if they have official or diplomatic passports.

6. Travellers with a re-entry permit issued by Myanmar.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa): –

TWOV is permissible for travelers continuing their trip to a third country with the same plane without leaving the airport.

Additional information: –

1. A tourist visa is only valid for no more than 28 days. Extension of this period is impossible once in Myanmar; however, a fine of USD 3 is imposed for each day of overstay and can be paid at the Immigration Office upon departure.

2. There are many restrictions on travel to specific areas within Myanmar. Please contact the information counters of Myanmar Travels & Tours.

3. Children aged more than seven years old and mentioned in the parent’s passport must have a separate visa.

4. The transit visa is valid only for 24 hours.

5. Travellers must have confirmed return or onward tickets.

Warnings

If travelers do not abide by visa requirements, they will be deported.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations: –

Free Import

  • The 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars and or the 250 grams of the tobacco;
  • 2 liters of the liquor;
  • 150 milliliters of the perfume as fair;
  • goods for personal use to the maximum value of USD 500.-;
  • The electrical and the electronic goods which were not more than USD 500.- and in the value;
  • portable (video) camera, HD camera or DV camera and the one spare (set) battery;
  • the portable computer;
  • a reasonable quantity of medicines for personal use.
  • All jewelry must be declared on arrival. Nationals of Myanmar must hold a re-import permit for previously exported jewelry.
  • A Phytosanitary Certificate is required for all plants or plant products (seeds, bulbs, cut flowers, fresh fruit, and vegetables) and must be declared.
  • Prohibited: host plants of pests and soil.

Export regulations: –

In Myanmar, the Gemstones (set or unset), jewelry, silverware, or crafts are finely bought: and the special cash memo or receipt provided by a clear approved dealer is finely required.

Crew members customs regulations. The same fine rules apply to crew members as to normal travelers as finely detailed.

Pets: –

A health certificate must accompany pets, and it was declared for the inspection on arrival. The health certificate must confirm the animal has been vaccinated against rabies at least one month before the arrival date for cats and dogs.

Baggage Clearance regulations: –

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the Myanmar international airport.

Airport tax: –

Airport Tax is levied on all passengers:

1. leaving Myanmar on international flights: USD 20.-.

2. Departure on domestic flights from all airports: MMK 3000.

Place of payment: airport of departure.

Exempt :

  • Transit passengers who are continuing their journey by the same aircraft.
  • Crew members on duty.

Currency Import regulations: –

Local currency (Myanmar Kyat-MMK): prohibited.

Foreign currencies: unlimited. Nationals of Myanmar must be declared on all foreign currency upon arrival. Foreigners must be declared on amounts that exceeding USD 10,000.- or equivalent as fine.

Currency Export regulations: –

Local currency (Myanmar Kyat-MMK): prohibited.

Foreign currencies:

  • nationals of Myanmar: export permit required;
  • foreign nationals: unlimited, and if holding proof of the ownership as detailed.
