IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements

All travelers except the following require a passport:

1. Travelers with a clear Identity Document that is issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) as fair.

2. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer’ issued by the United Nations as long as they are traveling on duty as acceptable.

3. Refugees and people without nationality or citizenship are holding documents as long as they have a re-entry permit issued by the country of residence.

4. The Sri Lanka visa policy is changed based on their diplomatic or official and regular Travel documents.

Document Validity

Passports and alternative papers, which or either of them, must be valid for at least three months after the period of the intended visit as described.

a. Sri Lankan citizens who may enter with the passports that have to be valid upon arrival.

b. Residents of Sri Lanka may enter with travel papers that have to be valid on arrival.

Visa Issuance

1. Before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Sri Lanka as fair.

2. Upon arrival: A visa may be issued if necessary to travelers/visitors coming for tourism as long as they are staying for no more than 30 days; this applies to:

2.1. Travelers with Chinese Taipei passports;

2.2. Citizens of the People’s Republic of China with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) is fine;

2.3. Citizens with the British passports regardless of endorsement in passport concerning their citizenship as well as mentioned;

2.4. Finely the Citizens of Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bhutan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Latvia, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Italy, Malaysia, Maldives, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Montenegro, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Republic of Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Spain, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America and Uzbekistan as listed;

– It is maximum possible to extend the intended visit for no more than three months from the date of arrival provided on the traveler has tickets and all other necessary documents as fair for their onward or return trip.

3. upon arrival: A visa may be issued if necessary, to travelers coming for tourism and staying for no more than 30 days provided they are:

3.1. Vietnamese citizens with official and diplomatic passports.

Visa Exemptions

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Sri Lankan citizens.

2. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer,’ which the United Nations issued, provided they are traveling on duty.

3. Foreign residents with a residence or re-entry permit that is issued by Sri Lanka as declared.

TWOV (Transit without Visa)

TWOV which is permissible for travelers who are all continuing their trip towards a third country within the 8 hours by the same or the first connecting plane so long as they are following things:

– holding the all other necessary documents for their next trip for proceeding; and

– holding confirmed onward tickets.

However, travelers are not allowed to leave the airport transit area. Besides, it is mostly recommended to get a transit visa before on arrival.

Additional information

1. The arrival of the traveler wants to enter Sri Lanka to carry out business activities for that before that visa is confirmed required.

2. Travelers who are all must prove to the Immigration Authorities that they have enough money to cover their visit to Sri Lanka, which is a minimum amount of USD 15 for each person for each day of the intended visit mentioned.

3. Due to the outbreak of swine flu (H1N1), all travelers arriving from infected countries will be requested to report to the relevant office to register their personal information and show that they are not suffering from any swine symptoms flu (H1N1).

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations:

Nationals of Sri Lanka and the Residents of Sri Lanka as well. Free import will only for by persons over 18 years of age as declared:

– 2.5 liters of spirits; and

– 2 liters of wine; and

– 250 milliliters of eau de cologne.

Non-Residents: Free import for only by the persons over 18 years of age as it mentioned:

– 1.5 liters of the spirits and two bottles of wine as fine;

– 250 milliliters of the eau de cologne and a small quantity of perfume as listed;

– souvenirs not intended for commercial use, up to the value of USD 250, as clearly stated.-;

– personal effects.

In the case of members of a family traveling together, the free import is, in general, only allowed for two members. Note: Mainly, the Certificate of the registration issued by the Department of Excise is required for import and the export of any raw material or keenly finished products of cigarettes, cigars, beedi, or pipe tobacco. The items must be declared upon arrival.

Passengers who are all required to declare upon the arrival of valuable personal effects and ensure free export.

Prohibited:

– dangerous drugs or narcotic substances;

– pornographic or seditious materials;

– any material ridiculing any religious belief.

Restricted:

– pharmaceuticals and medicines, except for personal use;

– goods for the commercial or trade purposes, and except for the trade samples;

– plants, fruits, birds, and their products. Import permits must be obtained before travel.

Export regulations

1. Export of the objects which is intended for personal use only is allowed.

2. The following items are prohibited:

– any material offending any religious belief;

– seditious or pornographic materials;

– narcotics or dangerous drugs.

3. Exporting of the following goods is restricted:

– medicines and the pharmaceuticals except for those intended for personal needs as mentioned;

– antiques;

– fruits, plants, birds and their products;

– explosives, weapons, firearms, and ammunition;

– Objects mainly for trading or commercial purposes except for some trade samples.

Pets

1. Traveler must obtain a previous permit from the Department of Animal Production and the Health before bringing any live animal into Sri Lanka as fine. Information can be obtained from:

2. As for cats and dogs, they must be accompanied by an official certificate of veterinary health and a certificate of vaccination against rabies issued by the veterinary authorities. A stamp fee of LKR 5 and a Customs fee of LKR 250 for each dog and it must be paid upon the arrival.

Prohibited:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China (People’s Rep.), Chinese Taipei, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong (SAR China), India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland (Rep.), Israel, Ghana, Korea (Rep.), Lao People’s Dem. Rep., Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Nepal, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russian Fed., Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Togo, United Kingdom, Vietnam as listed finely.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Sri Lanka.

a. Exception:

Luggage of transit travelers, which is cleared at the final destination in or out of Sri Lanka so long as the onward flight is within 24 hours. Not applicable when traveling to Hambantota (HRI) via Colombo (CMB), in which the case baggage must be cleared at CMB as fair.

Arms and Ammunition regulations:

Import permits required for firearms, ammunition, explosives, and weapons.

Wild Fauna and Flora:

The import of certain endangered species of plants, live animals, and their products is prohibited or restricted under CITES.

Airport tax

All the travelers who are not required to pay any airport tax upon departing from the airport as fair.

Currency Import regulations

Local currency (Sri Lanka Rupee-LKR) up to the amount LKR 20,000.-.
