IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements

All travelers except the following require a passport:

1. People without nationality or citizenship holding Identity Documents.

2. Travellers with a Seaman Book provided they are traveling on duty.

Document Validity

Passports and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid for at least six months after arrival.

a. Residents of Papua New Guinea may enter with travel papers that must be valid on arrival.

b. Citizens of Papua New Guinea may enter with passports that have to be valid on arrival.

Visa Issuance

1. Before arrival: Travellers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Papua New Guinea.

2. On arrival: A visa is issued to travelers coming for tourism or business, staying for no more than 60 days in any 12 months. A PGK 100 fee is charged for a tourist visa, and a PGK 500 is charged for a business visa. This facility is only available at Jackson’s International Airport, Port Moresby; Daru; Kagamuga Airport, Mt. Hagen.

Travelers must have a return or onward tickets.

Other ports of entry must have an ‘uplift letter’ issued by the Office of the Director-General. However, it is advisable to get a visa before arrival.

N.B.

1. For citizens of the People’s Republic of China, this facility only applies to:

a. The travelers with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China);

b. Travellers in transit to and from the Solomon Islands provided they have a visa for the Solomon Islands.

2. This facility does not apply to citizens of Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Republic of Benin, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde Island, Cameron, Republic of Central African, Chad, Comoros Islands, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa), Cote D’Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Dominica, Republic of Dominica, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea Rep., Haiti, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jamaica, Jordon, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Democratic Republic of Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Republic of Serbia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St Kitts-Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Sudan, Switzerland, Syria, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Togo, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, The United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Republic of Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Visa Exemptions

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Papua New Guinea.

2. Travellers with a re-entry permit which is issued by Papua New Guinea.

3. Travellers with a Business Travel Card issued by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation only if the label PNG (Papua New Guinea) is stated on the back of the card.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa)

1. TWOV, which does not apply to refugees and persons without nationality or nationality.

2.TWOV is allowed for travelers to continue their trip to a third country within 24 hours as long as they have verified their tickets and enough money to remain in Papua New Guinea. It is advisable, however, to have a visa before arrival.

N.B.

1. For citizens of the People’s Republic of China, this facility only applies to:

a. Travellers with the passports which were issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China);

b. Travellers in transit to and from the Solomon Islands provided they have a visa for the Solomon Islands.

2. Additional information

1. Refugees are only permitted to transit if a third country accepts them and traveling with a transit visa and United Nations representatives.

2. People without nationality or citizenship must hold all necessary documents for their next trip and onward tickets.

3. Travellers must have enough money to cover the expenses of their visit to Papua New Guinea.

4. All travelers may not engage in paid or unpaid jobs. Persons wanting to work in Papua New Guinea must find a job before applying for an entry permit.

Warnings

If travelers do not abide by entry rules, they will be deported by immigration authorities to their home country at the traveler’s expense or the carrier.

Prohibited

– Pig meat from New Zealand, whether fresh or canned, and unstained foodstuffs of animal origin from countries other than Australia and New Zealand, are prohibited.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations

Free import: General allowance of PGK 1,000.-(PGK, 500.-for persons under 18 years of age) for new products wisely; Articles over one year old may be allowed free admission in their own right.

2 liters of alcoholic liquor for individuals aged 18 years and older;

The 250 cigarettes or 250 grams of cigars or tobacco for persons of 18 years and older finely;

– a reasonable quantity of perfume;

– personal effects.

Wild Fauna and Flora:

The importation of tall plants, animals, and their products into Papua New Guinea is subject to the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals and Plants) and the Agricultural Protection Division, Post Office Box no. 2141, Boroko, Papua New Guinea, as mentioned.

Crew members customs regulations:

Allowed, once per 30 days:

– 250 cigarettes or equivalent in tobacco products;

– 2 liters of alcoholic liquor.

Pets

– The Quarantine period is 48 hours for cats and dogs imported from New Zealand  and Australia and nine months for cats and dogs imported from every other country. Relevant veterinary requirements shall apply. Pet animals are allowed to enter as a freight only.

– All animals and plants imported from countries other than Australia and New Zealand are prohibited.

Baggage Clearance regulations

Travelers’ baggage should be cleared at the first port of entry in Papua New Guinea.

Airport tax

Airport tax is imposed on passengers traveling on international flights: PGK 30.-.Place of payment: Airport of departure. Exempt:

1. Children under two years.

2. Transit passengers not leaving the airport.

3. Diplomatic and consular officers are holding endorsement of exemption in their visas.

Currency Import regulations

Local currency (Papua New Guinean Kina-PGK) and foreign currencies: which have no restrictions. The import of traveler’s cheques is allowed.

Amounts that exceeding of PGK 20,000.- (or equivalent) must be declared as fairly.

Currency Export regulations

The Residents and non-residents: local currency (Papua New Guinean Kina-PGK) and foreign currency: up to amounts of the PGK 20,000.- (or equivalent), subject to taxation clearance, if required. Amounts in which excess of PGK 20,000.- (or equivalent) require the Bank of Papua New Guinea approval as fair.

Nonresidents: can additionally export any currency they have imported if their stay is less than six  months.

In both cases, the amounts exceeding PGK 20,000.- (or equivalent) must be declared as finely.
