IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements

All travelers except the following require a passport:
1. Travellers with an «Laissez Passer» which is issued by the United Nations provided they are traveling on duty.
2. Travellers with a Seaman Book provided they are traveling on duty.
3. People without nationality or citizenship holding documents.
4. Refugees with travel papers «Titre de Voyage» issued according to the United Nations Conventions.

Document Validity

Passports and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid for the intended visit period.
a. Zambian citizens may enter with passports that have to be valid on arrival.
b. Residents of Zambia may enter with travel papers, which must be valid upon arrival.

Visa Issuance

1. Before arrival: Travellers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Zambia.
2. Upon arrival: if necessary, a visa can be issued free of charge to United Nations personnel commissioned to Zambia.
3. Upon arrival: if necessary, travelers with ordinary passports can get a transit visa for a stay up to no more than seven days against a fee of USD 50 provided they are citizens of countries not mentioned in the note below.
4. On arrival: if necessary, a visa that is valid for the period of the intended visit may be issued to the following:
4.1. Travellers with British passports:
4.1.1. A single-entry visa against a fee of GBP 70 (about USD 140);
– A double- or multiple-entry visa against a fee of GBP 240 (about USD 442);
4.1.2. A transit visa for a stay up to no more than seven days against a fee of GBP 70 or its equivalent in USD.
4.2. American citizens:
4.2.1. A fee of USD 135 for multiple entries;
4.2.2. A transit visa for a stay up to no more than seven days against a fee of USD 135;
4.3. Canadian citizens:
4.3.1. A visa for multiple entries can be issued against a fee of USD 55;
4.3.2. A transit visa for a stay up to no more than seven days against a fee of USD 55.
4.4. Citizens of all other countries with standard passports:
– A single-entry visa: USD 50;
– A double-entry visa: USD 80;
– A multiple entry visa: USD 160.
5. Upon arrival: If required, a visa can be issued free of charge to travelers with diplomatic or service passports not commissioned to Zambia. Yet, it is advised to acquire a visa before arrival.
6. All travelers applying for a visa on arrival must have a return or onward tickets. They are also recommended to have all passport data available before arrival at the Zambian airport of entry; otherwise, the charge will be ZMK 250 per person.

Citizens of Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, People’s Republic of China, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Guinea-Bissau, Republic of Guinea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates must obtain a visa before arrival from:
– The Chief Immigration Officer (Post Office Box 50300, Lusaka, Zambia), or
– Zambian missions in Congo Kinshasa (Lubumbashi), South Africa (Pretoria), the United Kingdom (London).
a. Travellers with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) can acquire their visa at any foreign representation of Zambia, together with the Chief Immigration Officer’s approval before arrival.

Visa Exemptions

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Zambia

2. Travellers aged less than 21 years old with British passports whose parents have a Zambian work or residence permit.

3. Foreign residents of Zambia with a residence permit or a re-entry visa that is issued by Zambia;

4. Travellers are staying for no more than the 90 days provided:

4.1. The citizens of Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cyprus, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Congo (Kinshasa), Dominica, Fiji, Grenada, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Republic of Montenegro, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Romania, Samoa, Malta, Republic of Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Saint Kitts-Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Swaziland, Uganda, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe.

4.2. They have travel documents known as (Titre de Voyage) released under the United Nations Convention for Refugees Resident in Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cyprus, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Fiji, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Republic of Montenegro, Namibia, Nauru, Romania, Samoa, Republic of Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Saint Kitts-Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, The United Kingdom, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe as listed finely.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa)

1. The TWOV facility does not apply to refugees and people without nationality or citizenship.
2. Travellers are continuing their trip towards a third country by the same or the first connecting plane within 24 hours so long as they are holding tickets with confirmed reservations and all necessary documents for their onward trip. Travelers are not allowed to leave the transit area as finely.

– Chief Immigration Officer, Post Office Box 50300, Lusaka, Zambia, or
– Zambian missions in Congo Kinshasa (Lubumbashi), South Africa (Pretoria), The United Kingdom (London).
a. Travellers with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) may get their visa at any foreign representation of Zambia, together with authorization from the Chief Immigration Officer before arrival.

Additional information

1. Visa exemptions apply to travelers staying for no more than 90 days in a given period of 12 months, which can be taken as a whole or in intervals.
2. Travellers must have a return or onward tickets, enough money to cover outward transport, and the required papers for their return or onward trip. Moreover, they must have enough money to cover the expenses of their visit to the country.
Suppose Immigration Authorities are not satisfied with the obligation to have return tickets and enough money. In that case, a deposit equal to the equivalent of a return air ticket may be required to cover the expenses of possible deportation of travelers to their home country.
3. Payment by non-residents of their accommodation at hotels has to be made in foreign currency. Payment in ZMK is only accepted if proof of the exchange of foreign currency into Kwacha is presented.

Warnings

If travelers do not respect entry rules, the transporting carrier will be subject to payment of fines.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations

1. The import of poultry and its related products is prohibited finely.
2. Travellers aged 18 years old and more are allowed free import of:
Four hundred cigarettes or 0,5 grams of pipe tobacco or 0,5 kg. cigars;
– 1,5 liters, 2,5 liters of wine, and 2,5 liters of beer.
2. The goods for personal use, up to a value of USD 1,000.- as mentioned.

Pets

Pets are allowed to enter. As for cats and dogs, they must be accompanied by an official certificate of veterinary health that is issued in the home country as well as an import permit, which must be obtained before importation using a written request to the Director of the Veterinary and Tsetse Control Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries located at Mulungushi House (Post Office Box 50060, Lusaka, Zambia). The importation of dogs also includes an additional vaccination certificate against rabies.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Zambia.
a. Exception:
Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside Zambia provided they do not leave the transit area.

Airport tax

Currency Import regulations

It is permitted to import local currency (Zambia Kwacha-ZMK) and foreign Currencies: amounts exceeding USD 5000- Or the must be declared.

Export of local currency (Zambia Kwacha-ZMK) is permitted, and foreign currencies: amounts exceeding USD 5000, Or equivalent must be declared.
